HSE Asbestos Training Information for Apprentices

Trainee and apprentice electricians can be at risk of exposure to asbestos.  Research has shown that although construction workers and trades persons know that asbestos is harmful to health, they are inclined to believe that it is a historical problem and do not take adequate action to protect themselves.

When young people are routinely exposed to asbestos fibres they can be at greater risk of developing asbestos related disease than older workers. This is due to the latency of the affects of asbestos particles on the body. Providing apprentices and trainees with information about the dangers of asbestos materials means they are better equipped to challenge poor working practices and protect themselves.

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) have launched a scheme aimed at apprentice and trainee carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other trades to highlight the dangers of asbestos in the workplace.  The scheme is supported by Jean Doyle whose husband died of mesothelioma after he worked as a Joiner all his life. Jean says ‘Dave’s death has had a devastating impact on our family.  Young people need to realize the real cost asbestos can have on their lives’.

Currently the scheme involves lectures being delivered at training centers and colleges but a free downloadable Learning Package is available from the HSE website.  ‘Asbestos The Hidden Killer’ is a power point presentation and can be downloaded to your computer.  This package is designed to raise the awareness of young trainees about the risks they face when working with or in close proximity to asbestos materials and providing them with basic guidance about what they need to do for their own safety and protection.

Asbestos shows up in so many of our older locations. Asbestos did a great job as insulation. I am glad that we learned of the dangers when I was just getting started. Thanks.
