Extensive updates: The Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment 4th Edition publishes in November.

Taking into account the HSE view promoting a proportionate, risk-based approach when assessing the safety of electrical equipment and appliances, the 4th Edition follows the findings of Professor Löfstedt’s research into the widely misunderstood requirements of PAT (Portable Appliance Testing).

The HSE’s Peter Brown has stated:

“We welcome this revised Code of Practice. It complements HSE’s guidance on maintaining portable electrical equipment and provides sensible, proportionate advice so that those who create the risks know how to manage them effectively.

By emphasising a balanced risk-based approach to determine how frequently equipment should be maintained, it should help reduce the likelihood of businesses wasting money on unnecessary portable appliance testing.”

We are holding a live webinar on the new guidelines from the IET’s latest Code of Practice on 6th March with IET Senior Electrical Engineer Richard Townsend, author and editor of the Code of Practice.

The CPD certified webinar will cover what has changed and the implications this will have for the industry, as well as give you a chance to post any questions or comments you might have to Richard and the IET. We will also be giving away a FREE copy of the new Code of Practice to one lucky attendee. For more information and to book your place visit http://www.voltimum.co.uk/webinar.

We would also like to hear what other topics you might like covered or more information on – you can send your suggestions and comments to enquiries @ voltimum.co.uk.

the IET Code of Practice for InService Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment has been around for a number of years, and is the accepted method of complying with the Requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Whilst there are many other methods you could use to comply, one would be hard pressed in a court of law to prove compliance, whereas PAT Testing is seen as best practice.

I’m very much looking forward to the release of the new code of practice, I’m sure it will help to clear up some of the messes there are currently within the PAT Testing industry
