About IP Codes and Ratings

An international classification system for measuring the effectiveness of enclosures (or boxes) is defined by the EN 60529 Standard.

IP66 Wiska Combi Box

Enclosures which house and protect equipment are given an Ingress Protection or IP Rating to signify the level of protection they give against foreign bodies.
The two digit IP Code signifies protection against solid objects (first digit) and water or moisture (second digit).

An X is sometimes used in place of one of the digits if there is only one class of protection.  For example IPX3 for moisture resistance only.

Additional letters or numbers are sometimes added to define extra levels of protection.

As electricians we have to give serious consideration to where to install  electrical equipment.  External influences such as weather, water and dust are determined by location and purpose of use.

A typical example of the requirement for a higher level of IP protection would be in an exterior installation or a special location such as a bathroom where a minimum IP Rating of IP45 would be needed.  A required protection against the ingress of water in a bathroom can range between IPX3 for sprays, to IPX6 for high pressure jets of water.

IP Codes

The first number signifies protection from solids
0: No Special Protection
1: Protected against solid objects up to 50 mm in diameter
2: Protected against solid objects up to 12 mm in diameter
3: Protected against solid objects up to 2.5 mm in diameter
4: Protected against solid objects up to 1 mm in diameter
5: Dust protected
6: Dust tight

The second number signifies protection from liquids

0: No special protection
1: Protected against dripping water
2: Protected against dripping water when tilted up to 15o from normal position
3: Protected against spraying water
4: Protected against splashing water
5: Protected against water jet spray
6: Protected against heavy jet spray
7: Protected against the effects of immersion
8: Protected against submersion

For example IP66 is Dust tight and protected against heavy water jet spray
