BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations 18th Edition

Unexpected New Edition?

There are some rumours going around that the IEE 17th edition of BS7671 will soon be superceeded by the IEE wiring regulations 18th edition.

This is obviously of concern to those training and taking 17th edition courses now who will then need to take even more courses in the near future.

Not Yet

The first amendment green edition (renewable edition!) of the 17th is expected to be available in July 2011 and the proposed amendments will have taken about a year to put together, so I can’t imagine that there would be an 18th edition any time soon.

The 16th edition was around for 17 years and there were many amendments, so it is very unlikely that we are due for a new edition after only 2 years.  This said, don’t rule out upgrading your qualifications as still further amendments and new technologies are added to our electrician’s portfolio.

Do you know better?

Hi Roy
RCDs are essential for safety. Using ELV lighting (12 volt) could be an option for you to keep things safe with ne RCD protection.

Do you need a RCD protection for outdoor xmas decorations. We install the decorations on lighting column at height min 4metres well above groud level. At the present time the decorations are protected by a 6amp BS88 fuse & RCB. Because the rcd is fitted inside the column all year round and only required around the xmas period, damp tends to set in and when switched on, not all ,but a few switch off automatically although no fault on the load side. We were thinking of just using a 6amp BS88 for protection.

Please advice.

How near a sink tap can you fit a water heater switched fuse spur?

Lets just forget the 18th edition regs and get right to it and publish the 20th edition
Oh and don’t forget health and safety I expect it will be too dangerous to use electricity
