Learning Lounge Electrical- Users Comments/Review

by Steve on October 6, 2011

I have covered Learning Lounge in several blog posts over the last few months and have recieved many queries about the training and the value for money. This post features an review by Tony who is a Learning Lounge subscriber. He raises some interesting points which may be helpful to anyone considering subscribing to the programme.

About Learning Lounge

The Learning Lounge Electrical subscription based website offers online training resources which can be a useful solution for electricians and trainees looking for flexible learning without the need to attend courses.

Learning Lounge Online Electrical Training

Learning Lounge Electrical Training

Electricians and trainees are finding the online video modules a good way to keep up with the latest regulation updates and also refresh  their knowledge. The training can also be helpful to students and apprentices who are already enrolled on college courses and studying for electrical qualifications or exams.

User’s Review by Tony

I thought I’d add my tuppenceworth in case it helps anyone to decide whether to pay for the Learning Lounge videos. Firstly it’s fair to say you don’t need those quizzes and yes it is simply a collection of useful videos on all stuff electrical. So at first you think – watch them all in one afternoon and be done with it, is that really worth £40?

Well, you need a lot more than an afternoon to take all that info in, there’s probably about 30 hours of video on there. Then you realise the convenience of logging in and taking it up from any point you wish. Yes there are basic videos that look like they were filmed circa 1974 which is actually a bonus as the principles haven’t changed much, and then theres more advanced and recent videos made 2011.

The only thing that is irritating for me is that when you set the player to watch a series of tutorials in sequence IOW to ‘PLAY ALL’ it comes out of screen mode and waits for you to click play again, in between videos, veyr irritating, but hey…

I am studying a 2357 course so I thought these videos would help and they certainly have. No, you will not pass an exam by referrinbg to these videos, you need much more effort to pass electrical exams than that approach. I was struggling on protective devices, so these videos helped, and when my course went on to motors (I was totally lost) the videos helped me a lot in understanding. I have also noted new stuff being added to the site as well which is always a nice surprise when you log in.

All in all you can see there is a lot of scope for improving the site, adding more videos and even offering training materials, etc. However as it stands now, I have long forgotten the £30+ fee I paid and I am still watching, going through the videos that where too advanced for me then but are useful now that I am progressing in my course. Having recently watched the Part P vid did help me to understand the requirements better and I passed the exam easily enough.

OK I will stop rambling on, no I don’t work for the Learning Lounge and yes it is a good resource worth the asking fee. Will I renew my membership next year, that depends on how much new stuff is added.

Hi Manda
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I too think that Learning Lounge is a great resource. I have found the tests useful to check whether I’ve understood the content correctly. I would work my way through a module until I thought I knew everything and then use the tests to find out if I had missed or misunderstood something. I think that find the things that you don’t know is important because these are the points you need to revise to strengthen your knowledge for exams etc.

I wish there was something like this around when I was training and at college. We didn’t even have an On-Site Guide!
I really like your blog and have I’ve published one of your posts here: http://www.electriciansblog.co.uk/2011/10/trainee-electrician-blogs-her-way-through-the-wiring-regulations/

I also use the learning lounge and have been finding it extremely helpful. I agree with Tony’s comments and would recommend subscribing. Well worth the money in my opinion.
